This otherwise healthy 13 year old Golden Retriever is presented to you because of sudden visual loss. Both eyes look like this. What is happening here, why might this have occurred and what diagnostic tests would be necessary? Continue reading

Here is a closer view of the retina, showing the haemorrhagic foci in more detail. What other tests would you do, more invasive than a simple blood count? Continue reading

What has this ten year old West Highland White Terrier got wrong with its eyes? And what can we do – topical cyclosporine doesn’t work at 0.2% or 2%, tacrolimus does no better and tear replacement (whoops I’ve given the game away with regard to my first question haven’t I?!) aren’t having much success either. Where next? Continue reading

Sorry this isn’t the best picture in the world but it shows what I saw well enough. This nine year old cross-bred has a positive swinging light test into its right eye (a Marcus-Gunn pupil for those of you liking eponyms!). The pupil in the right eye dilates as the light is directed into it showing that there is less ipsilateral stimulation than from the contralateral eye. The dog has had GME with involvement of the prechiasmal optic nerve and now has an optic nerve head looking like this. What can you see and can you work out what has happened? Continue reading

This labrador has had a couple of operations to replace what was thought to be a prolapsed nictitans gland but has now developed this substantial unilateral chemosis, resistant to topical steroid. What might be happening? Continue reading

Delightful little Roxy is suddenly blind with other neurological deficits. Nothing on MRI (well a brain for sure but no lesions – you know what I mean!) but a severe inflammatory picture on the CSF tap. What is causing her blindness? Continue reading

This year old labrador has developed a fluctuant mass in his medial canthus. What might your differentials be and how might you investigate this? By the way, the fluorecein you can see we placed in the eye never got to the nostril on this side while it rapidly appeared there on the right hand side after we put the same amount in the right lower conjunctival sac – just a little clue! Continue reading

Today this Akita turns up in the clinic with erosive lesions around its eyes and muzzle and an anterior uveitis, not with miosis particularly but with a muddy looking iris and intraocular pressures below 10mmHg. What might this be and how would you treat it? Continue reading
